West Seattle Rock Party 2014

Summers in Seattle are great for festivals—both art and music. I’ve already been to a few of both this year, but there has been one that made me feel like the corporate takeover of local music simply cannot destroy it all.

The West Seattle Rock Party went down July 25 & 26 at the Skylark Lounge on Delridge, and was billed as $100 cheaper and 100x more rocking than that “other party” going on the same weekend.

I was lucky enough to be invited to play the show with Skunk Rider—lucky in the fact that there were so many great rock bands that played over the course of 2 days.

Day 1 featured Skunk Rider leading off the whole thing the right way with some good stoner rock, and then Crawler straight up killed it on stage. They always rock, but the sound at the club was really dialed in that night. The guitar solos were bright and ripped while the rhythm section crushed the audience with thundering blows. Metametric kept the energy level high before Greenriver Thrillers torched the place with monstrous volume that simply refused to be ignored, and Suction ended the night in great style. There were people who came from Portland and even St. Louis to see them.

Day 2 was no less thrilling with Fluffer, Poverty Bay, Mind Vice, and Lark vs Owl. All great rock action that set the stage as it were for Stereo Creeps. Those dudes know how to party. If you haven’t seen them before, make sure to go to their next show because you won’t be disappointed. I know I wasn’t.

All in all, it was an amazing show and a great time. Hopefully this is the start of a tradition.
