April Fist!

I conceived of the idea for April Fist! sometime during the late winter of 2014. The original idea sprang from a Facebook thread, of all things, about ridiculous band names. After reading and adding to the band names thread, I had an idea to actually realize some. Why not just make up band names? Why not actually create some music to go along with them?

One of the band names I came up with that I especially liked was Top Secret Missile Crisis. I figured the band would be “republican punk rock” band who did over-the-top patriotic songs and would engage in general assholery–maybe even cover the Team America theme song (America, Fuck Yeah!). Of course, this was simply me creating back story for something because the writer in me naturally does that.

A couple of weeks and more than a few beers later, I had a conversation with Tobias and Marci about realizing a concept of creating bands for a one time only event where they would perform. They both thought it was a great idea, and we began working on the logistics of it. Although I wish I could take credit for it, Marci came up with the name, April Fist! when I spoke about the theme of the show should have something to do with April Fools’ Day.

What we decideFlyer for the first annual April Fist!d would ultimately take a year worth of planning. Five team captains would be chosen to share the stage, and those team captains would be charged with creating legitimate bands to play a one-time show. We ended up having musicians from Ancient Warlocks, Gazebo of Destruction, Toyboat Toyboat Toyboat, and Power Skeleton for the first April Fist!

We began contacting people who might be interested in creating bands for the event. It was about this point in the process where I realized that I wouldn’t have time to be able to actually realize the band I thought it would be funny to create songs for and play at the show. The lack of time forced me to curate the event, but I don’t regret that at all. I now have access to everything whereas the performers are compartmentalized–only revealing their true musical intentions when the event occurs and we celebrate our love for music with our friends.

Everything was proceeding swimmingly until the Josephine was forced to close, and the First Annual April Fist! lost the venue. After much scrambling, emailing, threatening, wheedling, whining, begging, and (a contemplation of) bribery, I was able to find a new home for the event. April Fist! will be realized (thanks to Brian Foss), and the first annual occurrence will be held at the Highline on April 4, 2015.

Happy Fisting!
